Hotel Rwanda
I could not believe I was not in the America's, what the hell had I done ? We stayed our first night in a guest house, no central A/C, very dimly lit rooms, any circulation came from the outdoors. The "vents" were little cut outs in the walls that let outside air as well as insects and reptiles into your living space. "Is that a lizard on the wall I ask myself as we eat our first dinner in a foreign land." 😭 we see our bedrooms have white nets around them, it's to "keep the mosquitos out and you wont catch malaria." So you mean the $500 worth of international vaccines won't help? We were warmed ahead of time to take our malaria prophylactic treatment. The next few days I would meet my colleagues who came from all walks of life, many who were "experienced" global health workers. Oh so this is a lifestyle? I'd never heard of this and stumbled across it. I immediately felt like an imposter. But I'm not a quitter, so let's do this. It was time to find myself a house to live in and a car to drive...boy was that another rude awakening. I rented a 2000 something green rav 4 for $600 a month! Wtf baby I coulda got a Benz for this rate! Can we talk about how this is a landlocked country amd everything is high as a camels ass . Got me some wheels on to see my temporary house. It was practically a mansion but with central air on consistent power. Has anyone ever heard of prepaid power? They called it "cash power" what in the whole fuck?! Long story short, lots of power outages and cold showers 🤣. Has anyone ever had lizards in their house? I would rather eat all my hair one by one than to encounter reptiles. Thank God for my mom she has nothing better to do than to tag along. She told me when I got off work she found an apartment to suit my lifestyle the catch is it's $2500 a month, fuck it UT giving me a rent stipend. The place has a fucking steam room with a radio in the bathroom, generator so minimal power interruptions, 3rd floor so views on views, security and basic cable. Ok I'm feeling this place.
